Very often, a KLS design offers a twist on a traditional motif—stripes, botanicals, brush-marks, all working from Kate Loudon Shand’s initial hand-painted patterns—done in ink, house-paint, gouache, and any other media she can lay her hands on. The linens are either screen-printed or digitally printed in the United States. The performance fabrics are digitally printed in Europe. KLS linens are printed in small batches, most often to order. As with all fabrics made from natural fibers, some variation in the shade of the base cloth is to be expected. This can have subtle effects on the printed colors. The digitally-printed linens are suitable for all kinds of light home furnishing and upholstery, and for all kinds of window treatment. The screen-printed linens are suitable for heavier use in the home. The pigment goes deeper into the fabric in this process and the print will last a good deal longer. The performance fabrics are very durable and are ideal for heavy use, indoors and outdoors, as well as in hospitality, nautical, and other commercial settings. They’re tremendous for ordinary upholstery in busy homes with kids, where accidents will happen.
